4 weeks old

It has been a pretty uneventful week.  We are doing well, though Adrian is still very fussy.  The Gripe Water helps, but he still cries a lot.  I got my sling in the mail and it's been very helpful.  It frees up my hands so I can cook and help the kids while still holding him.  Nursing is still going well and he appears to be gaining weight.

One thing that does calm him is his bath.  He absolutely loves it!  He kicks and splashes and is very mad when I take him out.  Big sis Diana likes helping with his bath too.

My blood sugars have been wonderful.  I also got my blood work back and everything looked good.  My total cholesterol was 217, which sounds high, but total number means nothing.  My triglycerides were 40, my HDL was 89 which is phenomenal, and my LDL was 120.  They would like it under 100 but I would bet money that it is fluffy LDL, the good kind.  Read more about this here:  I would like to have an NMR Lipoprofile test run.  It actually differentiates the LDL particle size and shows how much of the good (fluffy) and bad (hard or dense) LDL you have.  This is not a test that is routinely done, because it is a send-out and it is expensive and dr's can just give you statins, but I say why take a pill if you don't need to?  I asked about this blood test and my dr. told me that she would only run it if there was a problem with my LDL.  Guess we'll see if she considers 120 a problem.  I would really like to know my numbers.

My cgm graph.
I'm getting really impatient with the weight loss.  I am holding since last week.  I do think I'm seeing more definition in my belly, but I want to wear my sixes again!  I've upped the fat big time.  I'm eating lots of eggs and cheese and of course, my favorite-bacon!  I'm really hoping this does the trick.

3 weeks old

As you may have noticed, the blog has a new name!  I'm not pregnant anymore, so "Primal Pregnancy" doesn't exactly fit anymore.  Thanks to Steve Cooksey for the name suggestions.  I thought this one fit pretty well.

Adrian is 3 weeks old!  I can't believe it.  Time is just flying.  In the last couple days he has started rolling over!  He's done it twice so far.  This morning I had him on the bed with me and when I woke up, he was asleep on his tummy.  The pillow might have helped him some, but still pretty cool!  We had his 2 week check-up on Monday, and he had gained a whole pound since his 4 day appointment!  Nursing is still going great, except that he has been wanting to nurse constantly.  I'm hoping it's just a growth spurt.

It appears that Adrian is colicky like Diana and Aidan were.  He's been screaming for 2 and 3 hours on end. I found some Gripe Water at the natural foods store that has ginger, fennel and chamomile, and it seems to be helping.  He is really gassy as well.  I'm wondering if it's something I'm eating that's affecting him.  I know broccoli and cabbage are supposed to be bad.  I've been giving him gas drops as well.  Hopefully we'll find something that works!

I've been eating lower carb than before, and it seems to be working.  I'm down another lb. and my pants are getting loose.  I'm still a few sizes higher than pre-pregnancy, so not sure what I'll wear in the meantime.  My blood sugars have really stabilized.  I had an appointment Thur with the diabetes nurse practitioner and she was thrilled.  She didn't bat an eye about diet and the only thing she fussed about was my wearing flip flops.  I can live with that.  I was supposed to get blood work done, but it has to be fasting and they didn't tell me.  I was going to do it yesterday, but I woke up low and had to eat, so hopefully Monday I can get it done.  We are repeating my a1c and doing a lipid profile, chem panel, and thyroid testing as well as checking my kidneys.  I'm curious to see what my lipid profile says.  My last one was awesome.  I was previously on cholesterol meds before going primal and contrary to popular belief, high fat actually made it go DOWN.

2 weeks old.

Wow, the last two weeks have flown by.  Adrian and I are doing great!  I'm completely exhausted, but pretty much totally back to normal which is so different than after my c-sections.   At his 4 day appointment, Adrian was 8lb10oz which they said was great, only 2oz less than his birth weight.  They also said he had a 37cm head.  That's like 14.5 inches!  He has his 2 week appointment Monday, so we'll see how much he's gained then. He's been nursing great ( though almost constantly for the last couple days).  He is also sleeping pretty well at night.  He's been waking around 2 or 3 and then around 7 so not bad at all!  He has been having really fussy periods for 2 and 3 hours during the day.  I'm thinking I have another colicky baby.  Diana and Aidan both had bad colic until 3 months or so.  Matt is really good with him though, so that has been helpful.  I actually got a good nap in today!

For the first week or so, I had constant low blood sugars. My basals are lower than they have every been in my life. I'm taking around 16 units a day total.  I also was having issues with going low every time I nursed. Things seem to have stabilized at this point and I'm having good numbers with only a few lows.  I have started craving meat and fat again which is a relief.  I had only wanted fruit and veggies for the last part of my pregnancy.   Meat made me queasy and did not sound good at all.  I did find out at the hospital that my hemoglobin had dropped to 9.6 which makes me anemic for the first time in my life.  I've always had borderline high hemoglobin, and never worried about it, but I've always been a big meat eater.  I've been put on an iron supplement, and continue to take prenatal vitamins.  Hopefully that along with eating more meat will fix the problem.

We had our newborn pictures done at Sears yesterday, and Adrian screamed and cried the entire time. I had taken a bottle of pumped milk and he drank that when we got there and then after crying for the first half hour, he proceeded to nurse from both sides and still continued to cry.  I have to give props to the photographer as she was very patient, and was able to get pictures in between cries. I was sad I didn't get the mommy/baby pictures I wanted, but we got some really cute pics I think.

I'm currently 9lb above pre-pregnancy weight and am holding there.  I'm trying to decide how I want to proceed with weight loss and not affect my milk supply or my blood sugars.  I'm hoping a few more pounds come off on their own.  I've been inching back on the carbs and along with higher protein and fat, I don't think it will be too hard.
